scenes from our weekend

Saturday, I did my longest run before this marathon. 20 miles. It was supposed to be last week, but with working last Saturday, I had to miss my running group, and then it never happened during the week. Just setting aside that much time makes it nearly impossible to do during the week. It wasn't as hard as other 20 milers I've done, but I've come to learn at around 18 miles things will just hurt, no matter how many times you've done them. Hips, toes, shoulders, they all just ache at that much running.

After two weeks of VERY hilly routes, this route was pretty flat, and I felt that I was flying through it. I stayed strong up until mile 16, where my group headed back home (they were only doing 17) and I had to keep going. I had been preparing myself mentally for that break, and I'm glad I did, because it was still tough even after miles of "You're doing 20 today." "You are strong to do 20." over and over again in my head.

I didn't have a time goal, but I ended up finishing it in 4 hours 9 minutes. And I was thrilled. Not to mention burning almost 2,000 calories before breakfast.  I always feel more secure after the longest run before a marathon, and now I'm beginning to get a bit excited about Cowtown. Just a few more weeks!

Any run as good as that should be celebrated with a date night. I mean, I never have that many calories to use, so why not use them on a few good dark beers?

3. grilling peaches. I'll eat them for breakfast, lunch and dinner, please.
4. viola! final dinner product. looks almost as good as the magazine picture it came from.
5. spontaneous Sunday afternoon movie date.

Weekend: Clothes Swap Party

This weekend was filled with the fun of a clothes swap party.
what's a clothes swap party, you ask?
It's the best kind of shopping party: girlfriends together, bringing clothes from their closet that they just don't wear anymore and shopping from that big 'ol pile of loot!

For free!!

Girlfriends, fun snacks, and clothes.
Is there a better way to spend a Saturday? I argue there is not.

I got some heavy pinterest inspiration and made this for our decoration. I love love loved it.

get your girlfriend together and have one of these parties.
it's the best way to spend a weekend.
you'll walk away with some new finds! (I'll show you mine later this week)
and a full heart.

absolutely nothing

nothing.
that's what we did all weekend.
not really. but we didn't have plans,
and we spent a lot of time just together.

my man indulged me and took me thrift shopping.
a cute Jcrew top for $15 from Buffalo exchange makes my heart happy.
and finally some colored pants that work on me. a piece of my list!

that handsome man is my husband.

how was your weekend?

ramblin' monday

Hi friends!  I am expanding my weekend today by getting to golf for work.
it's a three day work week, and wednesday we're taking a half day.
today I'm golfing.
so it's really like a 1 1/2 day work week.
here are my rambling thoughts:

1. I am finally caught up on orders!
Heartsy is over, and I am now creating for the holidays!
2.  We had the gala for work this past weekend.
It was a great night, and we loved the mini vacation

3.  I could not be more excited to be spending some time at home.  We normally are only in Fort Worth for 24 hours before we have to head home again (5 hour drives), but this week we will be there for days!

4. My in laws and sister and law were in town a couple weeks ago--and we had a blast!  Here's a couple pictures.

That's all I've got.  Enjoy your Monday--make your weekend last one more day!

DIY Chevron Rug

note: this post has a TON of pics.  sorry if you are downloading forevs.

In my crazy pinning state, I decided we needed to make a rug.
because rugs can be really really expensive.
and I don't want to go drop $200+ on a rug.
but I want my living room to look cute, you know?

so I saw these on pinterest:
and I promptly decided I was qualified enough to make one.
my qualifications: really really wanting one. and other bloggers did it.
after some searing for stencils on line, we decided to go with the chevron.
you could use a roller on the chevron, and had to hand paint the stencil.
sorry stencil.

I'll tell you the ending now: we did it, it worked, and it's AWESOME.

here how we did it:

1. Go to ikea and get a cheap-o rug.  You want the weave to be flat (translation: non-puffy).  think flat and floppy rug.  This is the rug we got from Ikea

2. You will need 2" painters tape, floor paint, and a carpenters triangle.  You can get them all at home depot or Lowes.

3. Measuring:  Our rug was 55" wide, so we decided we wanted two "peaks" of chevron on our rug. Thus, our "midline" was at 27.5; thus, our two peaks were each 13.25 inches from the edge of the rug.
I know, I know, math in real life.  Figure out how many peaks you want for your rug, and measure. Mark where you want  your peak.

4. TAPING. Taping takes forever!  Use the carpender's triangle to get your peak for your chevron going.  I measured four inches on each arm of my triangle. The mark you made for where you want your peak will be helpful here.

You want your "stripes" to be 4" each so use two pieces of 2" tape.  Try to overlap as little as possible to prevent any length shorter than 4", but don't leave any gap (could cause issues during painting!)

To prevent having to measure each time, I used a little "jig" system.  Take two short pieces of tape, and back with a small notecard to keep them together.  This will by your 4" reference for spacing.
In picture above, I have my first row of chevron done, and have used "jig" to mark 4" to where the next row should start.  Just place your carpenter's triangle over the 4" jig's and use as a reference for your next row.

It is important to keep using the same angle when you are making your "peaks".  We used the carpender's triangle to get a 45 degree angle on each peak. Just keep taping...

When you get where you need to cut part of your tape, the method that worked best for us was using a ruler as a straight edge and a box cutter.  This is far easier than trying to cut or tear the tape straight. This will give you clean, straight edges.
EVENTUALLY, your rug will be taped.  I promise.  I messed ours up (USE YOUR CARPENTER'S TRIANGLE, PEOPLE) but Sam re-did it for me.  Taping will end.  It won't seem like it, but it will end.

Then, paint.  I used a 2" roller and it took about half of a gallon of paint.  We used floor paint.
I did a first coat, which took about 2 hours and soaked up a lot of paint, and let it dry overnight.  I finished with a second coat the next morning (much easier and only 20 minutes!)

Here's our rug reveal:

Jalepeno Hand

Yes, it exists.
It is VERY real.
if you handle tons and tons of jalepenos without gloves, your hand will look like this:

and then you might cry.
and keep you hand on a bag of frozen vegetables for 8 hours.
You will rotate the bag with others from the freezer as it thaws.

but your sweet sweet husband will bring you ice cream and flowers.
he knows how to speak to my heart.

date night going out will turn into-date night staying in, but the company can't be beat.

and finally, after some benadryl and a very long Sunday,
you will pass out
and Monday morning it will all seem like a bad dream.

but you will remember to always wear gloves when handling jalepenos.

or at least you will if you are me.

Dont forget to go enter the giveaways for two different, but both adorable headbands!

Garage sell finds

I have been wanting to find some lovely things at garage/estate sells
but the quality of the sells I have been to seems low; that is,
until this past weekend.

On Saturday morning, on my way home from my book club,
I stopped by a garage and estate sale, and found just what I have been looking for.

You may remember a while back I wanted to do this project. (credit pinterest)
Well, I still want to.  My heart has been wanting and I have been searching for some doilies.  And Saturday, the collection began. I was only able to find 2 (I didn't get to the sale as early as I had hoped), but for just a single dollar, I have started this project!

then, at the estate sale I found these neat cases.  We love mid century modern things, and these play into our style just perfectly

and, inside, there are perfectly maintained and beautiful games! both game cases cost $5.
then, I stumbled upon these neat wood napkin rings for just a buck.they look like something I had seen at pottery barn, and will complement our navy and white gingham napkins wonderfully.
and the most exciting find of the day: 3 vintage coke bottles!  I had been eyeing this project on pinterest, but didn't want to spend the $8 to buy the izzie drinks.  3 bottles, $3.

these were the perfect buy to do this project!  I was thrilled.
after a little work, they are now like this!

i loved the finds i found at my sales.  i'll be going out again, for sure.
